1. Drink water.

Avoid soda, which can coat your throat, which causes you to clear your throat, which can scar your throat…and so on.

2. Stay relaxed.

Don’t raise your head when trying to reach higher notes, or lower your head when reaching lower notes.

3. Warm-up your voice in the morning.

Even if you’re are not planning to sing. Like stretching the body to stay healthy, warming up your voice will help ensure a healthy voice.

4. Hum it before you sing it.

Humming is a great way to prepare your voice for singing. It’s also a great way to find your pitch.

5. Find the nearest wall to help you develop proper posture.

Stand with your back to the wall and slowly walk away. If you feel like you’re falling backwards, you’re probably standing correctly. It’s so important!

6. Learn more about lip trills.

You might feel weird doing them (especially if other people are listening), but voice teachers everywhere know that they are a great exercise.

7. Light a candle.

Stand or sit a few inches away, blow and bend the flame, without blowing it out. Simple exercise to work on your breathing.

8. Record yourself.

Recording never lies.

9. YouTube.

It’s a great tool — warm-up exercises, study tips, performances that you can study, vocal coaches…and so on. It’s almost endless.

10. Have fun!

Don’t worry about reaching that high note, or getting that hard part. Work hard, but in the meantime, have fun!
