The power of scripturally based songs

The bible has so many facets of worship and how we are to worship our Lord. We all know that the book Psalms is scripturally based songs and one of the first songs recorded in the bible is found in Exodus chapter 15, “The Song Of Moses”, and then also in Exodus 15:20-21 is where Miriam the sister of Aaron, “The Song Of Miriam” is mentioned. In the book of Colossians 1:15 was a song that Paul had the people sing to help them overcome and stay strong. Colossians 3:16 and Ephesians 5:19, these were songs as well. The book of Matthew 26:30 tells us where Jesus and the disciples were at the Lord’s Supper, they all sang a hymn together before going up to the Mount Of Olives. This particular hymn they sang was Jesus last song that he had sung. there are so many scriptures in the Old Testament showing us songs sung scripturally.

What are spiritual songs? Spiritual songs are singing and retelling of the Grace and the Mercy, and all of Gods miracles that He has done and how He has revealed Himself in our lives. Ephesians 3:16-17 shows us that we have a new nature and a new purpose…Now that is something to sing about!! Spiritual songs help us connect closer to God in THANKSGIVING and what he has done for us. Scripture songs have two forms to them, Worship and Praise. Worship is the love and adoration for our God. Praise is a bold declaration of God’s goodness and we need both of them operating in our lives. What is the purpose of Praise and Worship? It is to prepare the peoples hearts for the preaching of the Word. I know some may not fully agree here with me, but Praise and Worship gets the heart ready to receive Gods Word into their spirits. Praise and Worship opens up the atmosphere for the Lord to move in, speak in and change the hearts of His people. Have you ever noticed after a worship service or as some say a worship session, that people are more receptive to the Word of God? God knew how Praise and Worship will soften the hearts of His people. In my years of worship leading, I have seen two types of people (not all people just by my observation). You have those who just want all worship but not as much of the word taught, or the one who just wants to hear the word only. The ones who just want all worship, they tend to want a emotional lifting up and usually all they will talk about is the worship experience and usually not about the message given. Then you have the word only people and they most times will not come into the service until the pastor is getting ready to minister the Word. We need both Praise and Worship and the Word combined. We need the Worship Experience to give our God all of the glory and we need the Word of God to help in our everyday living. It is truly the Word Of God that does the changing inside of a person. We must have a balance of the Spirit and of the Spoken Word, again this is my opinion according to the Word of God. I believe the Body Of Christ in our current day and hour are a little off balance. We have made our Worship Services almost as if they were concerts and we have made the Worship Leaders superstars instead of a servant serving the one and only TRUE STAR, “JESUS”. Once again my personal opinion here for I do not walk in others shoes daily, worship has and always will be about the Lord, after all He was the one who gave gifts to us for His pleasure. In the bible days, most of the time all they used for instruments were harps (even tho others have been mentioned). They expressed their thanksgiving with their voices raised up to God. When we are singing scriptural songs, we are hearing God’s truths being sung out and they bring strength to our spirit man. Psalm 147:7 is a good example of making a joyful noise and rejoicing with thanksgiving to our God.

Here are some examples why we sing scripturally (bible based songs) 1-It allows us to give God all of the Glory. 2-When we are rooted in God’s Word, then our songs are being sung out scripturally. 3-When we sing, we are strengthened by His Spirit. 4-Scripture songs allows us to be in His presence. 5-Scripture songs reminds us of God’s promises and hides His Word in our hearts.

Songs that are sung scripturally and then music added to them, it causes us to be lifted up and calms down our inner man and takes our focus off of us and unto God. Every emotion and circumstance we are facing, our worship becomes a powerful tool that God gave us so we can connect with Him in one mind, one accord and in one spirit. Do yourself a favor and study in the Word Of God on scripturally based worship songs and imagine back in the bible days the people singing them out, let it paint a picture in your mind, how Gods Word was being sung out in a song. God left us mighty tools for this life’s journeys.
