Worship Leader Devotional “Going Deeper”: Seeing Green, Part 2
In Part 2 of this Worship Leader devotional I want to talk about the Parable of the Talents. Part 1. Unless you are part of a worship ministry team that is comprised of paid professionals, chances are your worship ministry team has a mix of people with varying levels of skill. Using the metaphor of the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25, we can pretty much tell if someone is a 1 talent person, a 2 talent person or a 5 talent person. We may never think to put a number ranking on other gifts like hospitality or administration, but when it comes to worship ministry musical ability, it is much more easily quantified. Not that this is good or bad, it just is what it is. Some people carry more worship ministry musical ability than others.
If you are a 1 talent person, then you need those who are more gifted and experienced to challenge you and help you develop and grow and to invest what you have rather than burying it and walking away. If you are a 2 or a 5 talent person, you need the 1 talent people to help keep your ego in check.
There will always be people who are more talented than you, just as there will always be people who are less talented. We all need each other to help us keep perspective. We need each other to help us hold tension in the balance.
A Worship Ministry is so incredibly powerful and holds so much potential. If there are no checks and balances in place to keep egos down and keep us crying in dependence and brokenness before the Lord, if there is no “thorn” to temper us, our egos may very well get out of control.
James, the brother of Jesus said that, “Where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” (James 3:16, NKJV)
The enemy would like nothing more than to stir up envy within the area of worship ministries. It’s probably one of his favorite tactics because he knows that if he can stir up envy, he is one step closer to destroying it.
To be continued…
